Disclosure/CRB Checks
Unsure about CRB checks/Disclosure? Read through the guide below for pointers. For more information visit http://www.crb.gov.uk/
What is Disclosure?
Disclosure, also known as a CRB check (Criminal Records Bureau), is a vetting procedure
undertaken by Criminal Records Bureau that verifies whether you are suitable to
work with children and vulnerable adults. The check involves examining police
records for past convictions and verifying your suitably to work with children
and vulnerable adults.
Do I have to be CRB checked?
If your work involves being in contact with children and/or vulnerable adults,
it is highly recommended that you undergo a CRB check. In most instances, organisations
make Disclosure checks a condition of employment if your role involves working
with children and/or vulnerable adults.
How many types are there?
There are two types of Disclosure: standard and enhanced. If you are being employed by an organisation, they are likely to stipulate which type of check they require. For more information on the differences between standard and enhanced Disclosure, please read the CRB's guide on the two levels here.
How long is it valid for?
There is no period for which your CRB check is valid, but it's good practice
to renew it every 1-2 years. It is in effect out of date once is has been issued
which is why you may find that each time you start a new job, you are required
to undergo a new CRB check. This will vary depending on the organisation’s own
policy for vetting staff and freelancers.
How do I apply for Disclosure if I’m self-employed?
Normally, if you are employed by an organisation they will run the check on your behalf. If you are contracted by an organisation on a freelance basis and they are registered with the CRB, they may be able to process your application for you. If the organisation is not registered, an Umbrella Body can countersign applications for Disclosure on their behalf. You cannot apply for Disclosure through an Umbrella Body as an individual.
