The Music Education Code of Practice

Originally developed for and by the profession through MusicLeader and Sound Sense

The Music Education Code of Practice helps to ensure music practitioners provide high quality music making and learning experiences for the people they work with. The code does this by providing a set of quality statements concerning all aspects of music learning:

By adopting the Code, practitioners demonstrate their commitment to quality work. By using the code as a benchmark, employers and hirers of practitioners demonstrate their commitment to requiring high-quality practice of those who work for them.

These individual commitments underpin good practice across the music education sector:

 Be well prepared and organised

Be safe and responsible

Have appropriate musical skills

Work well with people

Evaluate and reflect on my work

Commit to professional development

We have a guidance and dicussion page that provides more detailed information on the Music Education Code of Practice. Click here.

Signing up to the Code

Jeff McDonald delivers a demonstration on Music Technology whilst Emma Walsh looks on.When you sign up to the Code you can identify skill areas that may require further improvement. If you do identify areas for improvement then get in touch with your local MusicLeader network for 1-2-1 support and advice or book yourself on our Code of Practice Essentials workshop (see below).

Signing up to the Code enables you to:

  • Provide employers with the evidence that you are equipped with the wider knowledge skills and committment to deliver a professional service.
  • Inform non-music employers what to expect when they hire you.
  • Go to the top of MusicLeader Member directory searches.
  • Help the music leading profession to the gain recognition it deserves.

NB: To sign up to the Music Education Code of Practice you need to become a member of either MusicLeader or Sound Sense. Click here to join MusicLeader, otherwise sign up to the Code by clicking on the button below.
