Who is it for?
MusicLeader North East is aimed at music practitioners and project managers at every stage of their career, from experienced professionals to complete beginners, who are living or working in the North East.

  • Practitioners are those who are delivering music-making activity.  This may include music teachers, instrumental teachers, music service employees, music advanced skills teachers, community musicians, and musicians who also work in education.

  • Project Managers are those who manage the activity being delivered (in some cases these are one and the same people as the Practitioners).  This includes those specialising in working in the arts and music (e.g. music service managers, orchestra or venue education officers), or public sector employees who are increasingly employing musicians to deliver activity which meets social and educational as well as musical aims, such as Early Years workers, Youth Workers, Youth Offending Team Managers.

MusicLeader North East Launch - May 2005

MusicLeader North East was launched in partnership with Sound Sense at a networking day at The Sage Gateshead on 7 May 2005. A wide cross-section of music leaders took part including teachers, music service employees, cultural organisations and freelance musicians.

During the day, MLNE took the opportunity to gather information about skills and training needs in the formal / non-formal sector and also group participants sub-regionally to start to develop some ideas for the regional cluster groups.

This proved to be a valuable format for networking and information gathering on regional opportunities in the North East.  The process of consultation with the participants, with mapping exercises for the regional cluster groups was well received.  New members valued being part of the mapping exercise and found it an informative process for their own strategy.

“I really appreciate the fact that this exists to support us.  It is an invaluable resource and will greatly help me to feel more confident and less isolated.”
Network Day Participant

Some of the main issues and requests were:

  • Information on initiatives within the formal sector e.g. PPA / wider opportunities and guidance on how non-formal music leaders could make use of those opportunities
  • More opportunities to network and share skills, especially through shadowing and mentoring
  • A clearer picture of career progression in the sector
  • More cross-sector training: formal and non-formal together
  • More funding available to support CPD

The MusicLeader North East team were greatly encouraged by the enthusiasm and feedback they received from the delegates and value the contribution they made to the successful launch:

“This is a remarkable time for music in our region.  All across the Northeast schools, community centres and cultural venues are buzzing with youth music activities of all kinds – MusicLeader North East offers us a dynamic and inclusive framework for supporting the current and future music leaders and project managers whose commitment and energy are absolutely key to the sustainability of this work.”
Katherine Zeserson, Director of Learning and Participation at The Sage Gateshead
